This exquisite Victorian sewing bird is a beautifully detailed example of a 19th-century sewing clamp, made from cast brass and designed to secure fabric while hand stitching. The bird's beak opens and closes via a spring mechanism, allowing it to grip fabric gently but firmly — a clever innovation in an era before sewing machines were common in every home.
Mounted on a decorative clamp with floral engraving, the bird features finely textured feathers and retains its original velvet pincushion mounted on the top. It attaches securely to a table or work surface via the screw clamp below, acting as a “third hand” for the seamstress.
Dating from around 1860–1880, this piece is both functional and highly decorative, reflecting the beauty and ingenuity of Victorian sewing tools. It would have been a cherished item in any well-equipped sewing kit.
The clamp is in very good antique condition, with light wear and age-related patina. The velvet pincushion shows wear and fading, typical for its age, but remains original.
A wonderful piece for display or use, and a perfect gift for a collector of antique sewing tools, Victorian metalwork, or decorative treen.
Note: The cotton reels are for styling only, they are not included in the sale.
