Contact Customer CareHow are your patterns graded?
We meticulously inspect all our patterns to ensure the completeness and usability of both instructions and pattern pieces.
Each pattern piece undergoes thorough examination and documentation, receiving an overall grade reflecting its condition. This comprehensive process provides you with a clear understanding of your purchase.
It's important to note that our grading does not include the pattern cover, which may exhibit signs of age such as marks, discoloration, or tears. We display both the front and back of the cover so you can assess its condition before making a purchase.
What is your pattern grading system?
For pattern piece grading, we use the following system:
- Factory-Folded (FF): This indicates a pattern that remains in its original state, untouched and unused, with all pieces neatly folded as they were when initially packaged.
- Pattern Grade A: Uncut Pattern: While the pattern pieces have not been cut to the lines, they have been cut into sections but remain unused.
- Pattern Grade B+: Partially Cut Pattern: Some pieces of the pattern have been cut, suggesting prior use. Despite this, the cut pieces are in excellent condition and retain their usability.
- Pattern Grade B: Cut Pattern: The whole pattern has been cut along the designated lines and used.
Despite this, the pieces are in good condition. May have minor repairs.
- Pattern Grade C: Cut Pattern with Minor Damage: This
grade indicates a pattern that has been cut and shows signs of wear such as minor
tears, holes, or the presence of tape. While the pattern is usable, its condition may be slightly compromised. The cutting lines may also show some
imperfections.
How accurate are vintage pattern sizes?
Vintage pattern sizes can differ significantly from contemporary sizing standards, and accuracy can vary based on the specific era and brand. It's essential to note that clothing sizes have changed over the years due to shifts in body shapes, societal norms, and sizing practices within the fashion industry. Vintage patterns typically have a smaller size range than modern patterns, and the fit may be different. Additionally, the sizing used in vintage patterns might not align with today's sizing conventions. For example, a vintage size 12 may not correspond to a modern size 12.
How can I get the best fit?
To ensure a proper fit when using vintage patterns, consider the following:
Measurements: Rather than rely on the labelled size, take your body measurements and compare them to the pattern's size chart. Patterns provide measurements on the reverse of the envelope to help you choose the right size.
Mock-Up: Before cutting into your final fabric, consider making a mock-up using inexpensive fabric. This allows you to test the fit and make adjustments without compromising your main project.
Alterations: Be prepared to make alterations to the pattern to achieve a contemporary fit. Bodies have changed over the years, and adjustments may be necessary to accommodate modern proportions.
Consult Vintage Sewing Resources: There are numerous online communities and resources dedicated to vintage sewing. Seek advice from experienced sewers who have worked with vintage patterns, and they may provide valuable insights and tips.
While vintage pattern sizes may not directly align with modern sizing, careful measurement, testing, and potentially making adjustments can help you achieve the desired fit for your sewing project.
