A beautiful and functional piece of sewing history, this antique thread winder—also known as a silk winder—was traditionally used to store and organise silk and other fine threads, keeping them neat and free from tangles during sewing or embroidery.

Expertly crafted from lustrous mother of pearl, this piece showcases the iridescent beauty of nacre, the natural inner layer of mollusc shells prized for its strength and shimmer. Popular throughout the 1800s, these winders were often found in sewing boxes or included in decorative sewing sets, making them cherished accessories for needleworkers of the time.

The winder features a delicate scalloped edge with four distinctive lobes forming a quatrefoil shape. Both sides are embellished with three finely engraved concentric rings, creating a sense of depth and subtle structure. A border of fine incised lines runs around the outer edge, adding an elegant finishing touch.

There is a small shell chip or nick on one side near one of the cut-outs, consistent with age and use. Overall, the piece remains in good antique condition with no major damage.

An ideal addition for collectors, sewing enthusiasts, or lovers of antique tools.
