Antique Rosewood & Inlaid Sarcophagus-Form Sewing Box
This elegant early Victorian sewing box, dated 1839, is crafted in rich rosewood with pewter stringing and delicate mother-of-pearl inlay. Made in sarcophagus form and raised on turned bun feet, it features side handles and beautiful detailing throughout. A cartouche on the lid is engraved E.S. and dated 1839, with decorative quarter bobbin mouldings framing the top.
The interior features a lift-out tray and lid lining in original yellow silk and patterned paper, edged in pewter. The tray holds an exceptional set of original mother-of-pearl sewing tools and accessories: Five mother-of-pearl reels, thimble and needle guard, waxer, tape measure, three tools, shuttle, pins and wooden bobbin.
This sewing box also comes with a set of original letters and envelopes recording the gift of the workbox to Miss Shepard from her scholars – a touching piece of social history.
The box includes its original key, though the lock is no longer functioning. There are splits in the wood at the base and along the back edge, and a small loss to the mother-of-pearl inlay on the front. These signs of wear are entirely commensurate with the age of the piece and its practical use as a well-loved workbox.
A rare, display-worthy workbox with original tools and provenance – ideal for collectors of sewing antiques, early Victorian pieces, or sentimental gifts.
