A charming and decorative sewing box dating to around 1840, this elegant piece is crafted from papier mâché and beautifully adorned with hand-painted detail, inlaid mother-of-pearl, and fine gilt decoration—all hallmarks of early Victorian design and craftsmanship.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a lidded, compartmentalised tray, lined in decorative paper with soft pink silk and velvet. Six original mother-of-pearl-topped thread reels remain in their fitted compartments—an increasingly rare survival that enhances both the authenticity and the decorative appeal of this piece.
A delicate and highly collectable item, perfect for enthusiasts of antique sewing, decorative boxes, or Victoriana.
The box and interior has light wear consistent with it's age. In good antique condition overall.
